As part of our Cultural Capital Strategy, Year 10 pupils had the opportunity to visit London Zoo for a day of discovery, experience, and adventure.
The group travelled into Central London by train, a challenge in itself for some. Once at the zoo, they explored a wide range of exhibits, encountering everything from monkeys and lions to butterflies and insects. The sunny weather made the visit even more enjoyable, and the pupils made the most of every moment.
Although many had been to London Zoo before, there was still a real sense of excitement as they revisited familiar enclosures and discovered new things. The trip was a chance not only to engage with wildlife but to practise navigating busy public spaces and expanding their social confidence.
A highlight of the day was an unexpected celebrity encounter, Harry Lewis, a member of the Sidemen who was at the zoo filming a project. Many pupils recognised him immediately and were thrilled to have seen a celebrity in real life. For several, it was their first ever celebrity sighting, and the moment sparked lots of conversation about how to act appropriately around public figures.
Lunch was a relaxed picnic, giving everyone the chance to take in the atmosphere and reflect on their experience.
Overall, the day was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to build cultural awareness, social confidence, and shared memories.
One pupil commented: ‘I have been to the zoo a few times before but always enjoy going back. I love watching the penguins as they are really funny and always make me laugh. It was great to go with my classmates, it was a different experience to going with the family. I can’t believe we saw Harry Lewis. Some of my classmates were more excited about seeing him than seeing the animals in the zoo.’
