Cultural Capital
At New Rush Hall School (NRHS), we believe that education should open doors to experiences, places and opportunities beyond the classroom. Developing pupils’ cultural capital is therefore an important part of our curriculum and wider personal development offer.
For many of our pupils, previous experiences of education, social disadvantage or individual circumstances may have limited their opportunities to explore the wider world. We are determined that these barriers should not limit their future. Our Cultural Capital programme provides all pupils with opportunities to broaden their horizons, raise aspirations and develop confidence, independence and a sense of belonging.
Bringing Learning to Life
Across each academic year, pupils take part in over 150 planned trips, visits, events and experiences. These include curriculum-linked educational visits, museums and galleries, theatres, places of worship, careers experiences, guest speakers, themed events, recreational activities and residential opportunities.
These experiences are carefully planned to complement learning in the classroom. Whether visiting a cultural venue linked to a subject, experiencing a workplace or college, travelling somewhere unfamiliar or taking part in a residential, pupils have opportunities to apply their learning, experience something new and develop important social and practical skills.
Building Confidence and Independence
Our Cultural Capital programme is carefully sequenced from Primary through to Year 11. Younger pupils begin with shorter and more familiar experiences before progressing towards increasingly ambitious visits, longer journeys, complex public environments and residential experiences.
For our pupils, the experience itself can be just as important as the destination. Travelling independently, managing an unfamiliar environment, interacting with new people, trying something for the first time or staying away from home can represent significant achievements and help develop resilience, confidence and independence.
Importantly, our Cultural Capital trips and experiences are provided free of charge to pupils. We want opportunity to be determined by what will benefit a pupil, not by their family’s ability to pay.
Ultimately, Cultural Capital at NRHS is about broadening pupils’ understanding of the world, developing their confidence to participate in it and helping them recognise the opportunities available to them beyond school.
