Pastoral Leads

At New Rush Hall School (NRHS), we know that pupils are best able to engage with learning when they feel safe, understood and supported. Our Pastoral Leads play an important role in creating this environment and ensuring that pupils receive the right support at the right time.

Pastoral Leads work closely with pupils throughout the school day, building strong and trusting relationships and developing a detailed understanding of each young person. They support pupils with attendance, engagement, emotional regulation, relationships and behaviour, helping them to overcome barriers and successfully access learning.

They also provide an important link between home and school. Pastoral Leads work closely with parents and carers, teachers, therapists, mentors and other professionals to ensure that support is joined up and responsive to each pupil’s needs. Where concerns arise, we aim to communicate with families early and work together to address them before they become more significant.

In our Primary phase, pastoral support is structured differently to reflect the way the phase operates. Primary pupils spend the majority of their school day with their class teacher and a consistent class team, meaning relationships, communication and pastoral support are embedded throughout the day. Class teachers are therefore central to identifying and responding to emerging needs and maintaining regular communication with families. This is overseen and supported by the Associate Assistant Headteacher who holds pastoral responsibility across the Primary phase.

In our Secondary phase, each year group has a designated Pastoral Lead, providing pupils and families with a consistent point of contact and ensuring that pastoral support is coordinated as pupils progress through the school.

Our pastoral approach reflects our school values of friendship, respect, equality, courage, determination, perseverance, resilience and inspiration. Alongside providing support when things are difficult, our pastoral teams celebrate success, recognise progress and help pupils develop the confidence, independence and skills they need both in school and beyond.
