A Voyage of Discovery

Year 8 pupils, made a voyage of discovery on a trip to the Golden Hinde, a majestic ship that once sailed the high seas under the command of Sir Francis Drake. This trip complemented Year 8’s studies of the Tudors this term.

Pupils were given a full behind the scenes shipyard tour and to experience stepping back in time to what life would have been like for sailors in the sixteenth century with a guided navigation looking at day-to-day life on the ship for sailors, including a tour of the living quarters, handling replica weapons and pulling up the anchor from the sea!  They had a lot of fun and the highlight of the trip was preparing a cannon for firing under the watchful eye of Pirate Gary, our intrepid tour guide.

A highlight of our trip was the chance to walk past many famous London landmarks such as St Pauls Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge and The Shard and to see a mixture of old and new buildings in London.

A pupil said, “I really enjoyed learning about the life of pirates and pulling the anchor from the sea”.  Another pupil added, “Firing the cannon was fun and required us to work as a team”.

This was a memorable and exciting day for everyone and a wonderful voyage for all!
