As part of their history learning on the Tudors, year 8 pupils enjoyed an exciting trip to the Golden Hinde, the famous ship that sailed around the world under thecommand of Sir Francis Drake.
The visit gave pupils the opportunity to step back in time and experience what life would have been like for sailors during the sixteenth century. During a guided tour of the ship, pupils explored the living quarters, learned about navigation at sea and discovered the challenges faced by Tudor sailors on long voyages.
Pupils took part in a range of hands-on activities throughout the day. They handled replica weapons, helped to pull up the ship’s anchor and learned about the daily jobs that kept the vessel running. One of the highlights of the visit was preparing a cannon for firing under the watchful eye of Pirate Patrick, the group’s Tudor tour guide.
As well as exploring the Golden Hinde, pupils also had the opportunity to walk through central London and see some of the capital’s most famous landmarks. Along the way they passed St Paul’s Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge and The Shard, giving them the chance to see the contrast between London’s historic and modern architecture.
Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience. One pupil said, “It was amazing to learn about how sailors navigated the Golden Hinde around the world.” Another added, “I really enjoyed working as a team to pull up the anchor.”
The trip brought pupils’ classroom learning to life, and gave them a memorable insight into Tudor history. It was a fantastic day of exploration, discovery, and hands on learning.
