Year 7 pupils enjoyed an exciting and mind-bending day at the Twist Museum, an immersive gallery dedicated to optical illusion art in Oxford Circus, London. From the moment they stepped inside, pupils were surrounded by installations that challenged their senses and invited them to become part of the artwork. Instead of simply observing from a distance, they walked through distorted rooms, explored mirrored spaces and posed inside interactive exhibits that played tricks on their eyes.
Throughout the visit, pupils discovered how immersive optical illusion art uses line, colour, pattern, light and perspective to confuse and delight the viewer. They learned that what we see is not always reality. Our brains interpret visual information and can easily be tricked by clever design. By moving around each space and changing their viewpoint, pupils experienced firsthand how scale, proportion and contrast can dramatically alter perception.
The day was filled with curiosity, bursts of laughter and creativity filled the gallery spaces as pupils and staff experimented, observed each other and eagerly interacted with the illusions they were presented with. Hopefully, pupils developed a deeper understanding of how artists combine science and imagination to create powerful visual experiences. It was a fun, hands-on learning experience that brought art to life and showed pupils that immersive galleries can transform the way we see the world.
One pupil said: ‘This is a great place, I have never laughed so much, and I’ve learnt that you can’t always believe what you see.’
