15 students from Years 8–11 had the exciting opportunity to watch a performance of Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre. This memorable trip was organised by Go Live, a charity dedicated to giving young people access to live theatre and enriching cultural experiences.
The visit offered far more than just a performance. Following the show, pupils took part in an engaging careers talk, where they were introduced to the wide range of roles that bring a production to life. From directors and sound engineers to lighting and costume designers, pupils gained valuable insight into the many career pathways within the theatre industry. It was an eye-opening experience, helping pupils to understand that theatre is not only for performers on stage, but also for the talented professionals working behind the scenes.
Pupils reflected thoughtfully on both the performance and its themes. Some compared the live production to the filmed version available on Disney+, while for others, it was their very first time experiencing the show. Discussions highlighted deep engagement with the story: one pupil explored the sense of guilt Hamilton may have felt following his son’s death, while another reflected on his focus on legacy over family and what that reveals about his character. One particularly enthusiastic pupil even sang along throughout, having watched the show multiple times before— demonstrating just how impactful the experience was to see it live.
Overall, the trip was a truly magical and inspiring experience. Pupils not only enjoyed a world-class performance but also left with a greater understanding of the theatre industry and their own potential within it. The enthusiasm following the visit has been overwhelming, with many already eager to take part in the next theatre education opportunity. One pupil said: ‘I have watched the film of Hamilton many, many times, so to see a live performance of the show was absolutely spectacular. There is no comparison, watching a live show is such an amazing experience, I will tell everyone that they should go to the theatre to watch a show at least once. I can’t wait to go to the theatre again.’
