Digging for Victory on the school’s allotment

Sapphire class swapped the classroom for the allotment for a special history-meets- horticulture lesson- Dig for Victory!

Dressed up in camouflage boiler suits and inspired by the Second World War campaign that encouraged everyone to grow their own food, our young gardeners learned how families had to be resourceful, resilient and work together to make the most of what they had.

Pupils dug over a bed in preparation for a new crop and while they were digging, they experienced what an air raid might have felt like. When the air raid siren sounded, they had to down tools and shelter in their camouflaged Anderson shelter and wait for an all-clear siren before continuing to dig.

They learned about food rationing during the war, finishing the lesson with a fun obstacle course.

One pupil said: ‘I can’t imagine what it would be like not to be able to buy food I like when I want it, not to have some food available, and to only be allowed a certain amount each week, that must have been really difficult.’
