Careers Week – Desert Island Survival

On the last day of Careers Week pupils at New Rush Hall School took part in an engaging careers themed activity called Desert Island Survival. The activity was designed to help pupils think about the skills needed in the world of work while taking part in a fun and interactive learning experience. Pupils were encouraged to work together and respond to different scenarios that required careful thought teamwork and discussion.

During the session pupils were presented with a scenario in which ten professionals had crash landed on a desert island and had caught a fictional disease called chickenises. Pupils were told that there were only enough vaccines to save six survivors and they had to decide which individuals should receive them. Pupils discussed which job roles would be most useful in helping the group survive and potentially escape from the island which supported problem solving thinking and decision-making skills.

For our SEMH pupils this activity was particularly beneficial as it promoted communication resilience and confidence within a structured and supportive environment.

One pupil said, “I liked having to think properly about who would help us survive and it made me realise how different jobs need different skills.”

Desert Island Survival proved to be a valuable learning experience that helped pupils understand how everyday skills can be applied to future careers. Pupils engaged well throughout the session and the activity helped to build confidence enthusiasm and interest in future learning and career planning.

Congratulations to the winners of the game who were Sapphire Class and 9.2!
