Black History Month 2024 (BHM) at NRHS has been eventful and packed with learning and cultural events. Classes in Primary have been studying the impact on the lives of various Black historical figures such as, Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela. During lunch the Catering Team made yummy cupcakes to celebrate the figures, these prompted conversations amongst the pupils on each table during lunch and they were able to demonstrate their understanding of Black History Month, how we can celebrate and contributions made to society by black historical figures. We were all also treated to a wonderful Caribbean menu. This included, Jerk Chicken, rice and peas, as well as banana fritters made by one of our pupils in Year 11.
In Secondary, Key Stage 3 Tutor Teams have been learning about black artists, musicians and footballers. Our Key Stage 4 classes studied Marcus Rashford’s career and his support for charitable foundation known as ‘FareShare’. FareShare is an incredible charity which aims to fight hunger and tackle food waste in the UK. As an ambassador for the charity and his celebrity status, he has been able to highlight the thousands of vulnerable children who are at risk of food poverty during the school holidays. He has been able to share his own personal experiences and his work with FareShare has benefited many lives. During this last week, all the classes were tested on their knowledge by completing carefully designed Kahoot quizzes. It was very competitive!
Some pupils visited the theatre for a matinee showing of ‘The Lion King’. The Lion King is one of the longest running musicals featuring a diverse cast and impressive 25-year history. The pupils and staff commented on the amazing level of detail of the costumes and African masks which reverts back to celebrating Africa. The story also sheds a spotlight on the cultural importance of storytelling, which plays a big part in Afro-Caribbean cultures. The pupils were extremely well behaved and enjoyed the experience of watching a live West End musical.
Ms Allen, a Grandmother of one of our pupils, visited the school to cater for all the pupils, during our last week of BHM. Her catering team provided a number of different authentic Caribbean snacks such as Jerk Chicken wings, Hardo Bread, Festival and Patties. A canopy was set up in the playground and the pupils enjoyed sampling the food whilst socialising with their friends. The atmosphere was brilliant, pupils were very grateful for the new experience and Caribbean music added carnival feel. The pupils showed their appreciation for the food by thanking Ms Allen and her catering team, all pupil’s agreed it was a great way to end our celebration of BHM.
This month has been a wonderful for all involved and fantastic opportunity for learning, not just in the classroom but outside the classroom too. Next year we hope our BHM will be bigger and better!
