Pupils in Ruby and Amethyst classes went to the Unicorn Theatre to watch a performance based on the book Beegu by Alexis Deacon. Alexis Deacon’s much-loved tale about friendship, respect and the importance of including others was brought to life in the stage adaptation written and directed by Debbie Hannan.
Ruby and Amethyst classes have been exploring this book in their reading lessons. The visit helped them to develop their understanding of the text and brought the story to life. The pupils enjoyed engaging in the interactive parts of the show and were discussing how some parts were different to the book. They were excited to see how the production was brought to life and wondered whether it would be done with puppets or real people. One pupil asked “How are they talking in Beegu language?”
After the production, we walked to the River Thames to see Tower Bridge and the sights of the city. As we walked along the river, one pupil said “My first favourite bit of the play was the puppies and my second favourite bit was the ending”.
The pupils then enjoyed a McDonald’s in the sunshine before heading back to school. On the way home, another pupil said “I love the train now, I don’t want to get off. This was the best trip ever.”
