Pupils from Year 9 enjoyed an exciting trip to Hackney Empire to watch a school matinee performance of Noughts & Crosses.
Before the performance, pupils visited Pizza Express, where they enjoyed a meal together. The trip also included a special celebration, as it was Mr Olubala’s birthday. Pupils and staff marked the occasion by singing Happy Birthday, adding a joyful moment to the day.
The performance of Noughts & Crosses was a huge success. Based on the gripping Romeo and Juliet-inspired story by acclaimed writer Malorie Blackman and adapted by Sabrina Mahfouz, the production explored themes of love, revolution and growing up in a divided world. The show has received significant recognition, including winning Excellence in Touring at the UK Theatre Awards 2019 and being a finalist for Best Show for Children and Young People.
Pupils were fully engaged throughout the performance and had plenty to say afterwards. On the journey back to school, many pupils discussed their favourite moments, shared their thoughts on the characters and reflected on the powerful messages in the play.
One pupil said, “The show was really interesting and made us think about how unfair society can be. I really enjoyed the acting and the story.”
The trip was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to experience live theatre, develop their understanding of important social themes and enjoy learning beyond the classroom. It was a memorable day for all involved, combining culture, discussion and celebration.
