As part of our Christmas celebrations, pupils at New Rush Hall School were given the opportunity to visit central London to watch The Nutcracker at the Lyceum Theatre. For some pupils, visiting a theatre can feel daunting and watching a ballet can feel even more unfamiliar. However, at New Rush Hall we believe in giving pupils opportunities to experience new things and to broaden their horizons through cultural experiences they may not usually choose or have access to.
The Nutcracker is a classic Christmas ballet and provided the perfect festive atmosphere. Pupils were captivated by the music costumes and storytelling, and any nerves quickly disappeared once the performance began. Some pupils were even attending for the second time, as this has become a returning Christmas trip for the school, and they were just as excited as before.
To mark the occasion, pupils made a real effort with their appearance. After travelling into London during the school day, pupils changed from their school uniform into smart casual or formal clothing. They were proud to dress up for the theatre and understood that this was a special event. Staff were incredibly impressed by how seriously pupils took the experience and how respectfully they approached the visit.
Throughout the performance, pupils were engaged and focused, enjoying something that challenged expectations and stereotypes around ballet. The trip played an important role in helping pupils expand their understanding of different art forms while also celebrating the festive season together. One pupil described the experience perfectly, saying it was “the most beautiful thing I’ve done at Christmas so far.”
Trips like this remind us how powerful shared experiences can be. The Nutcracker offered pupils something magical festive and memorable, and it was a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas together as a school community.
