Let’s talk about……STEM

Kamil Jastrzebski, who is a Civil Engineer and works for Kier, visited the school to give our Y9 pupils an insight into career options within the STEM sector. This visit was arranged to support their understanding of job roles within STEM and what their education/career journey may look like once they leave NRHS. The presentation, given by Kamil, involved the pupils participating in tasks throughout which helped them to develop their critical thinking, problem solving, and innovation skills; all key skills that they will need to help them have a successful career within this sector.

Kamil talked about his experiences as a Civil Engineer and the grades required for post – 16 options which would enable them to study for a role within this sector. This gave some our pupils a bit of a wake-up call and showed them the importance of working hard and persevering with their learning if they are interested in a career within this field.

One pupil said: “The STEM talk was extremely useful, I didn’t realise that there were so many career options and possibilities within STEM, it has definitely given me something to think about when considering what subjects to study when selecting my GCSE options.

After the presentation, pupils enthusiastically discussed, as a group, the options that are available to them and the awareness of possible career paths that are open to them that they have not previously considered. They are also beginning to understand that classroom learning can connect with real world applications.
