Pupils from NRHS enjoyed an unforgettable day out watching Peterborough United take on Blackpool United, a trip made extra special by the chance to support former staff member Mr Lisby, who now plays professionally for the League One side. Many pupils knew Mr Lisby well, having worked with him in lessons for over a year while he pursued his dream of becoming a professional footballer. After previously taking pupils to watch him play at Braintree FC, the school was eager to seize the first opportunity to see him compete at a higher level following his new professional contract.
For some pupils, this was their first time attending a live football match. Excitement was high from the moment we arrived at the stadium. Pupils chatted with the club mascot, made score predictions, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere. Thanks to Mr Lisby securing tickets in the family section, pupils were treated to programmes, which they were thrilled to have signed by Mr Lisby’s dad, himself a former professional footballer. Once the game began, pupils were fully immersed in the experience, cheering loudly and erupting in excitement each time Mr Lisby touched the ball. A standout moment of the trip was seeing pupils gather at the edge of the touchline as Mr Lisby warmed up, proudly supporting someone they had known personally. It was a powerful and memorable experience for everyone involved.
Pupils returned buzzing from the day, describing it as inspirational and unforgettable. And the feeling was very much mutual. As Mr Lisby said: “It was one of the highlights of my career to be watched playing professional football by pupils from NRHS.”
A pupil said: ‘It was amazing to see Mr Lisby achieve his dream of playing professional football, he spoke to us a lot about his dream of making it as a professional footballer, he is an inspiration to me.”
