As pupils are learning about the Second World War in History, Year 9 pupils went on a trip to the Churchill War Rooms in Central London. The purpose of the trip was to explore the historic War Rooms that allowed Britain’s leaders to plot the allied route to victory during the Second World War and help bring to life the subject they are studying.
Before visiting the War Rooms, the pupils walked around Westminster where they saw the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Downing Street and Trafalgar Square.
Inside the War Rooms they explored the secret underground headquarters where the course of the Second World War was determined. They were able to walk in Churchill’s footsteps through the historic rooms and glimpse what life would have been like for those living and working underground.
One pupil commented: ‘It was very cool to see how they lived and worked underground during WWII. I don’t think would be able to stay in that space for long without being able to go outside. The rooms are very small, with a lot of people in them. It must have been a very stressful place to be.’
