Year 11 pupils had the incredible opportunity to visit the Globe Theatre for a guided tour. The pupils learned some fascinating information such as how 1,000 people could fit standing during a performance, and the quirky historical detail that there were no intervals because the audience used buckets as toilets.
The pupils showed great curiosity by listening attentively to our guide and asking engaging questions. Questions included how the thunder sound effects were made (revealed to be created using a cannonball in the attic!) and why there was a second level of the stage that was not used during the show (revealed to be seating for the upper class to show off their presence at the performance).
After the tour, pupils enjoyed a delicious meal at Nando’s, which was a definite highlight for many. We then explored Borough Market, marvelling at the wide variety of goods on display and sampling some of the wonderful freebies on offer.
One pupil said: ‘I really enjoyed the visit to the theatre but enjoyed going to Borough Market even more, I couldn’t believe that the market is almost 1,000 years old. The different types of food there, from all over the world, was amazing and the people selling the food could tell you everything about what they were selling and where the ingredients came from. It’s somewhere I would really like to go back to’.
