In school pupils in Sapphire class have been learning about WWII and The Blitz. In order to support their understanding of this topic, the class went to Duxford Museum to explore a range of war memorabilia.
The pupils were given a guided tour of the museum, in addition to seeing all the planes, they were told about the equipment that soldiers used in both World Wars I and II. They were also shown badges and medals awarded to service men awarded during both campaigns.
They enjoyed hearing stories of bravery and resilience shown by the service men and were allowed to handle some of the exhibits, this is something they all really enjoyed. Some of the exhibits were in glass cases which they were not allowed to touch but they understood that these were fragile and needed to be protected so that people could continue to understand what people experienced during the wars.
Both pupils and staff had a great day learning outside of the classroom, with one of the pupils saying that being allowed to handle some of the exhibits brought the things that they have been learning in the classroom to life.
A pupil said: ‘I really enjoyed the exhibition about the Blitz, it must have been really scary sheltering in a bunker and hearing the bombs dropping close by.”
