World Book Day aims to change lives through a love of books and shared reading. NRHS’s mission is to promote reading for pleasure, by offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own through this year’s World Book Day promotions.
World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.
The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. Spending just 10 minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can make a crucial difference to their future success and its fun for all involved
This year World Book Day took place on Thursday 2nd March 2023. In readiness for World Book Day, Secondary pupils were asked to prepare their entries to be submitted for the Competition. Key Stage 4 pupils were asked to create a piece of writing about their favourite book character and Key Stage 3 pupils were tasked to create an imaginative poster of their favourite book.
NRHS also partook in their first Scholastic Book Fair. Each pupil in Primary and Year 7 was given a World Book Day book bag and they were able to choose two books of their choice for FREE.
Primary pupils built their favourite book characters with potatoes! Similar to Mr & Mrs Potato Head and these were displayed in the Canteen for all to see. All the prizes were awarded on Friday 10th March 2023.
